CO-Driver Enquiry by Steve Limb

I am looking for a co-driver to do selected events in the Heart of England Rally championship in 2008?  I haven't competed for 8 years so the emphasis is on having fun but with a competitive edge so may suit a novice learning the ropes.

Perhaps you could reply if your interested.  Reply to stevenlimb@hotmail.com

ARTICLE

A few of us were out on the 205 / RWD Challenge at Sweet Lamb on Sunday 25th November. Owing to two 40 minute hold-ups the last stage was run in the dark. Naturally we were on the last stage.

Phil Collins and club member Peter Cotton were out in a BMW instead of the normal MK11 and finished 11th. They lost vision and time when their car’s windows steamed up on several stages. Ian Allsop was also out, filling in for a co-driver who was unable to show at the last minute and Neil Matthews / Jon Tedstone who unfortunately broke a driveshaft on SS5 when holding 2nd in class.

The WRGB saw a number of  Quinton members marshalling and doing various jobs on the rally and our only club entrants Andreas Mikkelsen / Ola Floene crashed out on SS9 while in 9th place.

26 of us made our way down to Wembley Stadium for the Race of Champions. It was a cold but exciting day with very few breaks in the action.

The last item on the cards was the Race of Champions with the final being fought out by Michael Schumacher, Germany, and Mattias Ekstrom, Sweden.

Ekstrom beat Schumacher in the best of three races. The final race was a heart stopper with Ekstrom and Schumacher almost neck and neck going into the last corner. Schumacher tried just a little too hard and crashed out 20 feet from the finishing line

7 crews competed in the Christmas Treasure Hunt organised by Pete and James Bowles. Everyone made it back for the presentation at the Badger’s Set.

Steve Bonham and Peter Fieldhouse are hoping to produce a Computer Rally Championship schedule for inclusion in the next Newsletter. So all you armchair rally drivers get your equipment warmed up!!!

There are no penalties for practicing BUT there may be the odd rally where the location will be kept secret until the day.

As previously mentioned earlier in 2007 regarding an additional incentive for drivers / navigators, your committee has decided to award a £50.00 voucher to the winning co-driver / navigator in all the various competition championships, in addition to all other awards mentioned in the Championship Rules.

It was also agreed that all championship incentive schemes will continue in 2008.

CHANGES AT FERRARI

The Ferrari team sacked its entire pit crew yesterday.

The announcement followed Ferrari’s decision to take advantage of the UK Government’s Youth Opportunity Scheme and employ people from Liverpool.

The decision to hire them was brought on by a recent documentary on how unemployed youths from the Liverpool area were able to remove a set of wheels from a car in less than six seconds without proper equipment, whereas Ferrari’s existing crew can only do it in eight seconds with millions of euros worth of high tech equipment. Prime Minister Tony Blair went on record as saying “This was a bold move by the Ferrari management, which demonstrated the international recognition of the UK under New Labour as most races are won and lost in the pits, Ferrari now have the advantage over every other team”.

However Ferrari may have got more than they bargained for. At the crew’s first practice session the Liverpool pit crew successfully changed the tyres in six seconds, but within 12 seconds they had re-sprayed, re-badged and sold the vehicle to the Mclaren team for eight bottles of Stella, a kilo of speed and some photos of Coultards bird in the shower.

This report was sent in by our roving reporter, Paul White.
