NATHAN AND JOHN ARE NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!
After a fifth straight class win and victory in the prestigious Two-Wheel Drive Challenge on the Swansea Bay Rally, Quinton Motor Club’s Nathan Crewe and John Connor have been declared winners of both categories in the Pirelli MSA National Gravel Championship.
Out of the extreme weather conditions in the forests high on the Epynt Ranges in Mid-Wales, it was Steve Perez in his Ford Focus WRC who emerged as the winner of this year’s Quinton Stages Rally. With new Quinton Motor Club member Stephen McAuley from Belfast sitting alongside him in the co-driver’s seat, the Vodka Kick boss and former British Historic Champion Perez finally claimed his first victory on the event by some 39 seconds over the cream of British Clubman’s regulars.
After rain in the previous week, the day started clear and sunny, drying the stages made famous by Wales Rally GB in recent years and dust even started to cause visibility problems for following crews in the morning stages. However, with the wind rising to gale force, torrential rain set in for the afternoon, making the track conditions slippery and very tricky.
On the opening test in Halfway, Perez stopped the clocks just a second down on reigning BTRDA Champion Will Nicholls in his Subaru and was a couple more seconds down on SS2 - Monument 1 - after a time-consuming spin. “It’s taking some getting used to,” gasped Chesterfield’s Perez, “switching back to the Focus from my Lancia Stratos.” However, after SS3 – Route 60 -, Perez hit the front by a single second and then the 2004 National Champion asserted his authority on SS4 in Caeo, increasing his lead to thirteen seconds.
At the end of the two-day RBS International Manx Rally, the latest round of the MSA Pirelli National Gravel Championships, Quinton Motor Club members again found themselves – in one case rather surprisingly – on the podium, the iconic event having seen stunning, but not untroubled, performances from both crews. Their success on this event, that as usual drew the best crews from both the UK and Ireland, meant they have retained their leads in the overall championships.
Ian Allsop, Quinton’s leading co-driver, was back with his regular partner Jon Ingram, but as the Subaru Impreza WRC that they normally use had been seriously damaged in a crash in the recent Killarney Rally of the Lakes, the pair had to accustom themselves at short notice to an older – and somewhat slower – Impreza S9 in a brief 10-minute test prior to the start of the event. With many of the controls and the handling totally different from their usual car, not least that this was a right-hand drive car rather than the left-hander that they are used, things did not bode well for the pair, who have previously been impressive on the extremely fast yet tortuous roads of the Isle of Man.
An astonishing total of 21 Quinton Motor Club crews faced up to many of the UK’s best single-venue rally competitors amongst the capacity entry of 75 cars at the MIRA Proving Ground near Nuneaton on a day when the varying weather conditions affected the final results on Quinton’s own Horiba D’Isis Stages Rally
Quinton Motor Club’s Champion Co-driver Ian Allsop achieved another podium finish after an excellent performance with driver Michael O’Brien on the latest round of the National BTRDA Series - the BETTA Somerset Stages Rally. After a long day of some 12 stages covering nearly 45 miles, the pair finished 3rd in their Ford Focus WRC 02 against top-class opposition and would have finished 2nd but for an irritating stall at a hairpin on Stage 7 that lost them some 28 seconds......Click Here for the full report

unexpected vacancy alongside him in his Ford Focus WRC 02 on the North
Humberside Rally. Neither disappointed their new partners, with the pair coming
home 2nd overall behind Vodka Kick boss and Allsop’s old rival Steve
Perez, who was returning to the forests after finally recovering from his
accident on last year’s East African Safari Classic.
